Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded directly to your teeth, covering up problems like stains, discoloration, chipped teeth, or misshapen teeth.

Veneers can be used on almost any tooth and can help you achieve the smile of your dreams. Veneers are advantageous because they look and feel like your other natural teeth. This allows you to chew, drink, and speak normally while also enjoying a perfect smile.

Am I a candidate for veneers?

Just about anyone can benefit from veneers; however, not everyone is a good candidate. You may not be right for veneers if you:

  • Grind your teeth
  • Have significant gum disease
  • Have weak or decayed teeth
  • Have a severe overbite or underbite

If the above applies to you, the team will recommend alternative treatments like dental crowns to improve your smile.

How do dentists place veneers?

Veneer placement requires two appointments. At your first appointment, your dentist removes a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth so your veneer fits snugly. Then, a dental technician will take molds of your teeth to ensure your custom-made veneers will fit your teeth. Then, you can choose the correct shade and shape to match the rest of your teeth.

Your dentist bonds your custom veneers to your teeth at your next appointment. Your teeth should feel comfortable, and your smile instantly improves.

How do I take care of my veneers?

Veneers should be cared for just like your normal teeth. You should:

  • Brush twice daily
  • Floss once daily
  • Visit your dentist for cleanings biannually
  • Abstain from smoking
  • Avoid foods that can stain teeth, like red wine or coffee

Veneers require you to be more mindful of chewing. Putting too much pressure on your veneers can cause them to crack or become dislodged. If your veneers do break or come off, they can be replaced one at a time.

With the proper care, your veneers can last up to a decade.
